I’ve always been passionate about making bread — there’s something magical about taking a few simple ingredients and transforming them into something so nourishing and delicious. Over the years, I’ve become particularly passionate about sourdough. It’s more than just bread; it’s a connection to history, to health, and to creativity.
Â
As I shared my sourdough creations with friends and family, I kept hearing the same thing: “You should sell this bread!” While the idea was flattering, it wasn’t quite practical. One loaf sells for $5, and with my current oven, scaling production was simply not realistic. I needed a way to bring more value to my passion. That’s when the idea for sourdough workshops came to life.

With a growing interest in healthier diets and the unique appeal of natural fermentation, sourdough has become a symbol of wholesome, artisanal eating. I saw an opportunity not just to teach, but to share the pure joy I feel when making sourdough.
Â
What started as a hobby turned into a rewarding adventure. I began promoting my workshops on Facebook and Instagram, reaching people eager to learn and experience the art of sourdough baking. The response was incredible—not just because of the $1,500 I earned in just seven workshops, but because I was having so much fun doing it. The workshops became a source of joy for me and a delightful, hands-on experience for my students.
Â
This simple shift—teaching instead of selling—allowed me to share my passion, connect with others, and turn my love for breadmaking into a sustainable and fulfilling business model. It’s proof that when you combine what you love with what others are curious about, everyone gets to rise together—just like the perfect loaf.
Here’s the beauty of the workshops: instead of selling a single loaf for $8, I now sell the experience of making bread, which is far more valuable. Teaching a hands-on sourdough class means I still get to bake, but I only need to make one loaf—my demonstration loaf. That loaf transforms into something priceless, representing the unique, immersive experience of the class. Afterward, I get to enjoy it, while my students take their carefully prepared dough home to ferment, bake, and enjoy fresh bread on their own schedule. They leave not just with the promise of freshly baked bread but also with valuable skills and a newfound appreciation for the art of sourdough.
A big part of sourdough’s magic comes from the starter. My starter, Eden, is 38 years old and full of character. She’s the soul of every loaf I bake and every loaf my students bake in class. During the workshop, I introduce Eden to everyone, sharing the history and importance of maintaining a sourdough starter.
As a parting gift, every student receives a jar with a piece of Eden to take home. This way, they’re not just leaving with bread—they’re leaving with the tools and knowledge to continue their sourdough journey. It’s a way to carry forward the tradition and creativity that makes sourdough so special.
These workshops aren’t just about bread; they’re about connection. They’re about sharing something I love with others and helping people discover the joy of baking. For me, it’s more than a class—it’s an opportunity to bring people together, inspire creativity, and give them the confidence to make something amazing with their own hands.
If you’ve ever been curious about sourdough or want to experience the magic of making your own bread, these workshops are the perfect way to start. And who knows? Maybe your loaf will become the beginning of a new passion too.
